Course Description:
The focus of this class is on the development of practical and functional skills needed to live independently.  Topics covered include time management, meal preparation, nutrition, safety, sanitation, care and maintenance of clothing, and skills for shopping.  Activities will be designed to meet the individual needs of the students.

STANDARD AND BENCHMARKS

Content Standard A: Students will evaluate individual and family management practices related to the human, economic, technological, and environmental resources

Performance Standard (Benchmark):

A.8.5              Understand the need for effective personal living skills

Core knowledge and skills:

  • Demonstrate proper hygiene practices
  • Demonstrate concepts of time management
  • Demonstrate concepts of money management
  • Demonstrate concepts of home environment management

Examples of performance activities:

  • Make a bulletin board reflecting appropriate dress for various occasions, including weather conditions/season changes
  • List personal, physical and psychological attributes.  Discuss strategies for developing and accentuating attributes in positive ways
  • Perform a task (set table) several times.  Keep a record of speed, accuracy etc.  Discuss acceptable amount of time to complete a task and why it needs to be done a specific way, etc.
  • List teacher expectations and which ones relate to responsibility and time management (i.e., arriving to class on time, completing assignments on time, etc.)
  • Observe other classes and document situations when people demonstrated time management and responsibility skills
  • Plan an appropriate food choice at a restaurant given a limited budget

A.8.6  Understand the impact of personal choices on wellness

Core knowledge and skills:

  • Understand the relationship of personal size to nutrition needs
  • Understand the importance of exercise to health
  • Understand the relationship of cleanliness in the home to personal health
  • Understand the differences between proper and poor hygiene
  • Understand techniques used to manage stress

Examples of performance activities:

  • Find pictures of different types of exercise and develop a personal plan for exercise.  Discuss need for physical activity and rest
  • Describe how a person may feel when they have illnesses.  Develop a list of common illnesses and treatments
  • Identify good hygiene procedures (i.e., brushing hair, brushing teeth, bathing, etc.)
  • Bring in various hygiene products.  Discuss ways to determine which products are effective and ineffective
  • Identify causes of stress and list effective ways to cope with stress

E.8.3 Understand food and nutrition information

Core knowledge and skills:

  • Understand how nutrition relates to health
  • Identify and categorize food groups using the food pyramid
  • Understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy food choices
  • Understand the need for balanced meals and nutrition
  • Understand information on nutrition labels
  • Know why it is important to follow a recipe
  • Understand how to follow a recipe
  • Understand basic food preparation terminology
  • Know food preparation equipment
  • Know how to use measuring equipment

Examples of performance activities:

  • Cut out pictures of food from magazines and sort them into specific food groups
  • Using pictures of food, combine them into a balanced meal for the day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc.)
  • Categorize foods using the food pyramid
  • List the number of meals eaten in one day and typical foods served at each meal.  Identify the nutrition and caloric content
  • Bring in five nutrition labels.  Identify serving size, nutrition and caloric content

Performance Standard (Benchmark):

E.8.4  Understand safe and sanitary food practices

Core knowledge and skills:

  • Identify the characteristics of perishable foods and appropriate storage methods
  • Understand the necessity for preparing and storing food safely
  • Identify ways to prevent food-borne illness
  • Identify potential safety hazards in the home
  • Understand safety procedures to follow when using appliances and kitchen tools
  • Identify the use and proper storage of common household cleaning products and equipment
  • Use a variety of kitchen tools for measurement purposes to ensure safe food preparation

Examples of performance activities:

  • Demonstrate appropriate safe food preparation practices in a lab setting (i.e., proper hygiene, steps for clean-up, etc.)
  • Set up a kitchen demonstrating necessary safety habits
  • Practice using products and equipment to clean the classroom (dust, vacuum, etc.)
  • Using food pictures or containers, put items in the correct storage area (shelf, refrigerator, freezer, etc.).  Discuss why items need to have particular places

Performance Standard (Benchmark):

K.8.3 Understand how to build and maintain personal and social relationships

Core knowledge and skills:

  • Use conflict management strategies (i.e., consideration of co-worker’s point of view)
  • Understand difference between a compliment and a criticism, and appropriate ways to express both
  • Understand the relationship of one’s own behaviors and others’ reactions
  • Know techniques to build and maintain friendships
  • Understand the different roles in a family
  • Know how different behaviors affect relationships

Examples of performance activities:

  • Review and identify whether statements are compliments or criticisms
  • Practice appropriate behaviors in a variety of social settings.  Take a field trip to different settings: restaurant, theater, etc.
  • Identify and discuss problems/conflicts that arise in class between students.  Explain how interpersonal skills affected others.  Identify interpersonal skills and strategies for improving the situation

Performance Standard (Benchmark):

K.8.4 Understand the need for appropriate behaviors in a variety of situations

Core knowledge and skills:

  • Understand the importance of positive self-image and attitude
  • Understand the importance of appropriate communication and feedback
  • Understand the importance of respecting the property and feelings of others
  • Demonstrate appropriate manners and etiquette in a classroom and social situation

Examples of performance activities:

  • List ten ways to show respect for self and others
  • Role-play various situations.  Discuss different points of view and the steps taken to show respect for others’ points of view
  • Identify the role of each individual in the food lab.  Discuss how each role can improve self-esteem
  • Write positive comments that show respect for others.  Discuss as a class and make a bulletin board
  • Identify good hygiene practices.  List how these practices improves respect by others

  • Understand how interpersonal skills affect working with others
  • Identify effective strategies for communicating on the job
  • Explore personal occupational interests
  • Understand that jobs fit into different occupational categories
  • Understand the importance of thinking before taking action
  • Understand how decision-making applies to the work place
  • Understand the process for setting and achieving a goal
  • Use time wisely
  • Understand the importance of initiative/effort to achieve a task
  • Identify quality standards for various jobs
  • Understand how personal needs can be met through work
  • Identify ways in which individuals help society
  • Understand the importance of organization

Examples of performance activities:

  • Use the Lifelong Learning rating sheet to discuss and demonstrate examples of appropriate and inappropriate interpersonal skills.  Reflect and evaluate one’s own interpersonal skills
  • Discuss characteristics, qualities, responsibilities and prerequisites for various occupational choices
  • Experience various jobs of interest through activities such as on-site visits, job shadowing, speakers, etc.
  • List characteristics of realistic goals.  Discuss how one makes realistic goals.  Identify a personal goal and develop a plan to achieve this goal.  List some career goals and ways to determine if these goals are appropriate
  • List ways to encourage initiative in self and others (i.e., How do I talk to/motivate, myself?)
  • Discuss why projects are done a specific way, the expectations and the satisfactory ways of finishing projects
  • List two examples of the best work you have done.  Explain why
  • Self assess quality of work.  List ways to improve
  • Develop visual aid (folder, poster, etc.) that shows different ways of organizing.  Determine which organizational methods and/or tips work best for each individual and why

Performance Standard (Benchmark):

L.8.9 Demonstrate responsible citizenship

Core knowledge and skills:

  • Identify requirements and benefits of working with others
  • Identify strategies for resolving problems that might arise when working with others
  • Understand how a job affects building personal and social relationships
  • Understand the importance of individual components of a cooperative effort
  • Practice team membership skills (e.g., cooperation, leadership and listening)

Examples of performance activities:

  • Complete a project individually and then as a team.  List the benefits of working as a team (i.e., more efficient, effective use of time)
  • Pop popcorn for class.  (Each student will have a specific responsibility.)  Discuss/evaluate whether this was better done as a team or as an individual
  • Work with others to accomplish tasks, such as cooking labs
  • Identify jobs that require more than one person
  • Document feelings when working with others.  (i.e., How do you feel when someone doesn’t do his/her “job”?) Discuss how this affects personal and social relationships
  • Identify issues that arise when working with others.  Develop strategies for teamwork situations
