STANDARDS AND BENCHMARKS

Standard #1:

Engages in conversation, provides and obtains information, expresses feelings and emotions, and exchanges opinions in a language other than the student’s own

Proficiency is demonstrated when the learner:

1.1.1    Uses appropriate vocabulary and expressions for common interactions
1.1.2    Asks and answers questions about various topics
1.1.3    Shares likes, dislikes and simple preferences in everyday situations
1.1.4    Uses appropriate vocabulary to acquire goods and services
1.1.5    Follows simple instructions in order to participate in classroom and/or cultural activities

Standard #2:

Understands and interprets a language other than the student’s own in its signed form on a variety of topics    

1.2.1    Understands signed materials on familiar topics
1.2.2    Uses previous classroom experiences with the language to understand its signed form
1.2.3    Comprehends brief, signed messages on familiar topics
1.2.4    Comprehends the main idea of selected authentic media

Standard #3:

Presents information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics in a language other than the student’s own

1.3.1    Dramatizes songs, short poems, and/or dialogues
1.3.2    Prepares and presents short narratives or dialogues about his/her personal life
1.3.3    Gives simple commands
1.3.4    Tells or retells stories
1.3.5    Signs brief messages

Standard #4:

Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied

1.4.1    Observes and imitates appropriate patterns of behavior used in the culture studied
1.4.2    Identifies some common beliefs, practices and attitudes within the cultures studied

Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied

 1.5.1   Identifies some historical and contemporary influences from other cultures that are significant in both cultures

Acquires information and recognizes the distinctive viewpoints that are available only through a language and its cultures

1.7.1     Accesses information in the language studied to gain insight about other cultures and/or the student’s own

Standard #8:

Demonstrates an understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and the student’s own

1.8.1     Identifies cognates, word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and sentence structure to derive meaning
1.8.2     Identifies idiomatic expressions and understands their impact on communication and how they reflect culture
1.8.3     Identifies cultural and linguistic characteristics of the target language and how they compare to one’s own language
