Band 3 grades 9-12

Standard 1:  Sings alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
+ Understands the relationship between instrumental and vocal technique

Standard 2:  Performs on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
+ Performs accurately and independently in small and large ensembles
+ Uses ensemble skills (e.g., balance, intonation, rhythmic and dynamic unity) when performing in small and large ensembles
+ Performs with expression and technical accuracy, in small and large ensembles, a varied repertoire of band literature at class B to A level

Standard 3:  Improvises melodies, variations and accompaniments
+ Improvises in a selected style
+ Improvises in various tonalities
+ Improvises melodic and rhythmic variations on a given melody

Standard 4:  Composes and arranges music within specified guidelines
+ Composes an original melody and/or harmonic accompaniment within specific guidelines
+ Uses technology sources when composing and/or arranging music
+ Arranges an existing piece of music using various compositional techniques

Standard 5:  Reads and notates music
+ Identifies, defines, and performs standard notation symbols and terms
+ Reads music that contains grade B to A technical demands
+ Uses technology to read and notate music
 
Standard 6:  Listens to, analyzes, and describes music
+ Describes how the elements of music are used to create mood and expression
+ Compares and analyzes musical characteristics from one genre or style to another


Standard 7:  Evaluates music and music performances

+ Uses specific criteria for making informed, critical evaluations of the quality and effectiveness of performances, compositions, arrangements, and improvisations

Standard 8:  Understands the relationships between music, other arts, and disciplines outside the arts
+ Compares characteristics of two or more arts within a particular historical period or style and cites examples from various cultures
+ Identifies ways in which the other fine arts (e.g., theater, dance, visual arts and non-arts disciplines) are interrelated with music
+ Identifies ways in which the role of a performer is similar to, and different from, various arts and non-arts disciplines


Standard 9:  Understands music as an integral part of history and culture
+ Identifies various uses of music in history and the characteristics that make it suitable for the event
+ Identifies the various roles that musicians perform in a culture or historic era
