Music Lab - Grades 9-12

Standard 1:
Sings, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

Benchmark
Performance will be satisfactory when the learner:
1.1 Sings with expression, alone and with others
1.2 Acquires vocal technique appropriate to the selected music

Standard 2:
Performs on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

Benchmark
2.1 Acquires performance skills on a variety of instruments appropriate to selected genres
2.2 Performs on at least one instrument, alone and in groups 

Standard 3:
Improvises melodies, variations and accompaniments

Benchmark
3.1 Improvises embellishments and variations on a given rhythm
3.2 Improvises melodic embellishments and simple rhythmic and melodic variations on a given melody
3.3 Uses technology (computer, synthesizing keyboard) to improvise accompaniments

Standard 4:
Composes and arranges music within specified guidelines

Benchmark
4.1 Composes an original melody (or rap) and uses the computer to select an appropriate accompaniment
4.2 Uses a variety of traditional and non-traditional sound sources and electronic media when composing and arranging

Standard 5:
Reads and notates music

Benchmark
5.1 Identifies and defines standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation, and expression
5.2 Reads at sight simple melodies, harmonies, and rhythms in treble and bass clef
5.3 Uses technology to read and notate music
5.4 Uses creative and standard notation to record musical ideas of self and others

Standard 6:
Listens to, analyzes, and describes music

Benchmark
6.1 Analyzes and describes the uses of elements of music (e.g., melody, rhythm, etc.) and expressive devices in aural examples representing diverse genres and cultures
6.2 Identifies, visually and aurally, voices, specific instruments, and instrumentation in a variety of styles, genres and cultures

Standard 7:
Evaluates music and music performances

Benchmark
Performance will be satisfactory when the learner:
7.1 Develops awareness of accepted criteria for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of music and music performances and applies the criteria in personal listening

Standard 8:
Understands the relationships between music, other arts, and disciplines outside the arts                      

Benchmark
8.1 Compares characteristics of two or more arts within a particular historical period or style
8.2 Explains how elements, artistic processes (e.g. imagination or craftsmanship) and organizational principles (e.g. unity, variety, repetition, and contrast) are used in similar and distinctive ways in the various arts and cites examples

Standard 9:
Understands music as an integral part of history and culture

Benchmark
9.1 Compares, in several cultures of the world, functions music serves, roles of musicians, and conditions under which music is typically performed
9.2  Describes distinguishing characteristics of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures
9.3  Identifies sources of American music genres, traces the evolution of those genres, and cites well-known musicians associated with them
