Standard 1: Understands various strategies and processes used to solve problems and to communicate mathematical ideas
8.1.1 Uses a variety of strategies to understand problem-solving situations and processes (e.g., working backwards)
8.1.2 Formulates problems, determines information required to solve a problem, chooses methods for obtaining this information, and decides on limits of acceptable solutions
8.1.3 Represents problem situations in and translates among oral, written, concrete, pictorial, and graphical methods
8.1.4 Uses a variety of reasoning processes to model and solve problems
8.1.5 Knows how to justify and defend work

Standard 2: Understands the concepts of numbers, numeration, and number theory
8.2.1 Understands the concepts of ratio, proportion, and percent and the relationships among them
8.2.2 Understands the basic number theory concepts (e.g. square numbers and roots)

Standard 3: Understands number operations and the processes of computation
8.3.1 Understands the correct order of operations for performing computations using rational numbers
8.3.2 Solves proportions (e.g., sets up proportions; finds the missing number in a given proportion; identifies integer multiples in ratios)
8.3.3 Understands the properties of operations with rational numbers (e.g., distributive property, commutative and associative properties of addition and multiplication, inverse properties, identity properties, absolute values)

Standard 4: Understands the concepts of measurement
8.4.1 Understands the basic concept of rate as a measure (e.g., miles per gallon)
8.4.2 Understands formulas for measuring area (circles and tapezoids) and volume of three dimensional figures

Standard 5: Understands the concepts of geometry and spatial sense
8.5.1 Understands the basic concept of the Pythagorean Theorem
8.5.2 Understands geometric transformation of figures (e.g., rotations, translations, dilations)
8.5.3 Understands the mathematical concept of similarity (e.g., scale, proportion, growth rate and congruency)

Standard 6: Understands the concepts of statistics, data analysis, and probability
8.6.1 Organizes and displays data using tables, graphs (e.g., line, bar, circle) frequency distributions, plots (e.g., box and whiskers, stem and leaf, scatter) and summary statistics

Standard 7: Understands the properties of patterns and functions and the concepts of algebra
8.7.1 Understands the basic concept of a function (i.e., functions describe how changes in one quantity or variable result in changes in another)
8.7.2 Uses concrete, numerical, and graphic models to develop algebraic models of relationships (e.g., the algebraic models of relationships, the algebraic expression for the area of a rectangle, A = LW)
8.7.3 Solves linear equations using concrete, informal, and formal methods (e.g., using properties, graphing ordered pairs, form)
