District & Staff Achievements
• The Green Bay Area Public School District was named to the AP Achievement List by the College Board for the 3rd year. The district was one of 539 U.S. public school districts nationally recognized for significant gains in Advanced Placement® access and student performance.
• Eisenhower Elementary 4th grade bilingual teacher Sara Rhode was named the Associated Press Coach of the Year as the head coach of the Green Bay Notre Dame Girls basketball team.
• Eisenhower Elementary bilingual teacher Sean Fields has been awarded a Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program grant to Mexico for the 2013-14 school year. Fields is one of 28 U.S. and international teachers who will travel abroad next school year through the program.
• Chappell Elementary has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme School. Currently, Chappell is one of only six schools in the state to achieve this prestigious authorization.
• Retired district physical education teacher Rosie Sylvester was honored with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s Joy of Effort Award for her distinguished service, dedication, and commitment to improving physical education and sport. Prior to her retirement, Rosie taught at King, Jackson, and Keller elementary schools, among others.
• Langlade Elementary Principal Tammy Van Dyke was named an Outstanding Administrator by the Wisconsin Association for Talented and Gifted.
• Sullivan Elementary Social Worker Janelle Poetter received a 10 year DPI license given only to educators who successfully complete the Wisconsin Master Educator Assessment Process.
• Sullivan Elementary School won a $10,000 grant through the NFL Network to “keep gym in school.” • Howe Elementary teacher Janice Huhtula was awarded $1,000 worth of classroom supplies, as part of the annual Office Max A Day Made Better advocacy program to help erase teacher-funded classrooms.
• Danz Elementary was named an NFL Play 60 Super School and received a $10,000 NFL Play 60 grant to help promote wellness and activity. They were one of 34 schools nationwide to receive the honor.
• Casey DeGrand, teacher at Tank Elementary was selected as one of 10 award recipients of the Green Bay Packers Community Quarterback Award.
• Chappell, Keller and Kennedy Elementary schools were named 2012-13 Wisconsin Schools of Recognition. This recognition honors schools for their success in educating students from low-income families. This year marks the third consecutive year Kennedy has received this award.
• Keller Elementary was named a high-progress Wisconsin Title I Reward School for 2012-13.
• East HS teacher Mark Strohschein was selected as a state winner of the Agriculture Teacher Award. This honor was presented at the 33rd state convention of the Wisconsin FFA Alumni Association in Fond du Lac, WI. The award is presented to an outstanding instructor of agriculture education and an advisor of an FFA chapter. The award evaluates the instructor on their alumni membership, participation level of local, state, and national alumni activities, their ability to promote the FFA alumni, and the instructor’s level of recruitment for the local FFA Alumni Affiliate.
• Preble HS’s Sting Cancer group recently received the Young Philanthropist Award from St. Mary’s/St. Vincent in recognition of exceptional charitable support.
• Courtney Worth of Southwest HS and Mark Strohschein of East HS were recently recognized in a letter from State Superintendent Tony Evers for their help in updating the Model Academic Standards for each of the Career and Technical Education areas. Courtney was commended for her expertise in the area of family and consumer science, and Mark for his expertise in agriculture and natural resources. Both were part of the standards writing team.
• Southwest HS science teacher Scott Liddicoat was chosen as the recipient of the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program’s Formal Educator of the Year Award for 2013. To commemorate this honor, Liddicoat will receive a $1,000 award and up to $250 to support his efforts in energy education. This award was created to recognize individuals who are making a difference in improving energy literacy in Wisconsin, and have made energy education a priority in their teaching and outreach initiatives.
• Southwest HS was named one of Newsweek’s 2013 Best High Schools: #1408 in the country and #32 in Wisconsin! According to Newsweek, their ranking highlights the best 2,000 public high schools in the nation – those that have proven to be most effective in turning out college-ready grads. The list is based on graduation rates, college acceptance rates, AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP/IB/AICE scores, and the percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course.
• West HS business teacher Joe Zehren received the Excellence in Education Alumni Award by the Professional Program in Education at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay. This award is highly competitive and recognizes select alumni who have demonstrated excellence in education by making significant contributions in the field.
• West HS’s application for candidacy for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) has been accepted. West will officially be considered an IB MYP candidate school in September of 2013.
Academic & Co-Curricular Achievements
• The East HS academic decathlon team for took 2nd in the regional competition at UW-Green Bay on January 11, and advanced to the state level in March. Senior Kurtis Casperson was named the Wisconsin Academic Decathlon "Top Scholar" in the Essay portion of the competition.
• Six East HS HOSA-Future Health Professionals attended the state competition in Wisconsin Dells April 7 – 9. East’s Alex Rodriguez scored a 1st place in Medical Spelling which allowed him to advance to the national competition in June. • Preble HS senior Charlie Devillers was the only tuba player chosen to play in the honors orchestra through the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) in Madison. East HS senior and pedal harpist Kristen Pfluger was selected as one of 10 students in the state to perform at the 2012 WSMA state festival. Southwest HS freshman clarinet player Karin Heiser was also chosen to perform with the WSMA’s state honors band in Madison.
• Kurtis Casperson and Kristen Pfluger of East HS were awarded the Rotary Student Leadership Award as part of the annual scholarship competition sponsored by the Rotary Club of Green Bay (Club 2663). Students from five area high schools presented a point/counterpoint argument to members of the Rotary Club on April 29th at the KI Convention Center. The winning team of Kurtis and Kristen effectively argued the points/counterpoints on the merits of gun control legislation. Jon Kresin and Katie Akerboom of Preble HS received runners-up recognition as part of competition.
• Preble HS senior Austin Mease was one of six state finalists nominated by State Superintendent Tony Evers for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
• Preble HS junior Priyanka Navani won 3rd place in this year's St. Norbert College Diversity Essay Contest.
• The Preble HS “Rendezvous” show choir team placed 1st in the Class A division, were 6th runners up in the finals, and received the Spirit Award. Team “Center Stage” achieved 1st runners up in the finals, and received Best Choreography. East HS “Rhapsody in Red’s” Julia Delvaux took the Outstanding Female Vocalist award.
• The Preble HS math team finished first in the All-Metro Math League. Preble won all five 2012-13 math meets to take first place.
• Preble HS’s Spencer Guo was ranked 2nd in the state of Wisconsin for the 2013 National French Contest in French Level 2. Spencer ranked in the 95th percentile.
• Twenty members of the Preble HS chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) traveled to Wisconsin Dells from April 14-16 to compete at the State Leadership Conference. Jessica Franco, Staci Kropp, and Annie Robertson took home 1st place in the Global Business event and Lizzie Keiler who took 1st place in Introduction to Business. They all earned the right to compete at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA this summer.
• The Southwest HS Chorale and sixChappell Elementary students performed with Kenny Rogers on stage during his Christmas concert at the Weidner Center. The students were included in all of the action involving Rogers and his cast, and performed six songs on stage.
• The 25th annual Press-Gazette Media Academic Team is an elite group of seniors who excel in the classroom, in extracurricular activities, and in community involvement. The following district students made the list: Erin Huffer of Southwest HS, Sonya Loberger of West HS, and Amanda Hermans of Preble HS.
• Southwest HS won eight medals at the 17th annual Solar Olympics sponsored by Wisconsin Public Service.
• Dalton Kohlbeck of Franklin MS was honored for exemplary volunteer service with the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
• The DIamonds took 2nd place at the Destination Imagination state tournament in Stevens Point and advanced to the Global Finals in Tennessee in May. The team included: Ashley Vandehei (Edison MS), Mason McFarlin (Edison MS), Bailey Jolly (Edison MS), Alexis King (Edison MS), Ethan Craft (John Dewey Academy of Learning), Alexia Kane (Edison MS), and Dawson Baudhuin (Red Smith).
Athletic Achievements
• The East HS football team was nominated as a Wisconsin Sports Network “Team of the Week.”
• East HS’s Armando Torres medaled at state for cross country with a 6th place finish, and from Preble HS, Daniel Laluzerne finished 12th, and Nick Freitag finished 80th.
• The East HS girls’ softball team was named FRCC divisional champions.
• The East HS cheerleading team placed 2nd in the regional competition in Wisconsin Rapids on February 16, and advanced to the state competition in Madison.
• Antonio Ford of East HS was named an honorable mention for the “Boys Basketball Performance of the Week” in the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
• East HS student-athlete Morgan Nohr was one of 18 players selected to the Wisconsin State Soccer Olympic Development team. The Wisconsin team and players from 13 other state U.S. Youth Soccer Region II ODP teams will play and train in front of regional and college coaches during the Region II ODP Tournament in July. This is a tremendous honor which could ultimately lead to college soccer scholarships and/or a roster spot on the U.S. Women's Olympic team when Morgan is old enough to participate four years from now.
• East HS junior Monique Muehlethaler and Level 9 gymnast at Air Force gymnastics in Green Bay is the first gymnast from the Green Bay area to qualify for the Western National competition. She competed in California and placed 3rd overall at the 7 state Regional Competition which allowed her to go on to nationals.• Preble HS’s Jake Wallenfang was named Wisconsin Sports Network’s Player of the Week.
• Preble HS volleyball player Annie Goerdt was nominated as a Wisconsin Sports Network “Athlete of the Week.”
• Preble HS’s Jill Englebert was named the FRCC Girls Cross Country Champion.
• The Preble HS boys’ soccer team was named the 2012 Division 1 Regional Champion, and advanced to the sectional championship.
• The Preble HS girls cross country team finished 14th at the state meet.
• 2011 Preble HS graduate Taylor Vanden Plas ran in the USCAA Cross Country national championships in Lake Placid, NY. Taylor took 60th place overall, her personal best time.
• Preble HS’s Alex Heimermann and Jake Wallenfang were named to the WFCA regional football team, and both received honorable mentions for the WFCA All-state football team.
• Preble HS female cross country athletes that achieved academic all-state honors: Jill Englebert, Morgan Jindra, Natalie Majkowski, Sophia Sachs, Maddy Hoffman, Brooke Wimberly and Abbie Peters, who combined for a 3.97 GPA. Daniel LaLuzerne also attained all-state academic status with a cumulative GPA of 3.71.
• Preble HS junior Alex Lee placed 5th in the 100 back at the conference swim meet. Austin Sturdivant, senior at Southwest HS was the conference runner up in the 50 free and the 2013 FRCC Conference champion in the 100 free.
• Evan Garcia and Dalton Tielens of Preble HS made it to the WIAA state individual wrestling tournament in Madison. Evan placed 4th in the 126 lb. weight class.
• Preble HS track and field athlete Jake Wallenfang was nominated for the WisSports “Athlete of the Week.”
• Preble HS took 2nd place overall in the men’s division 1 WIAA Track & Field state championships in La Crosse, only one point behind Brookfield East, the now three-time consecutive state champion. The Preble boys relay team of Robert Starnes, Cory Cegelski, Will Daniels and Jake Wallenfang also broke a state record and took 1st place in the 4x100 meter relay. In addition, Preble senior Jake Wallenfang achieved a state record in the boys’ pole vault after clearing 16 feet.
• Red Smith 5th grader Kaiser Neverman broke two Wisconsin State competitive swimming records. During the 2013 YMCA State Swimming Championship in March, he broke the 50 butterfly and 100 butterfly records for 10 and under boys. His times also broke the WI USA swimming records for the same events, one of which was over 25 years old. Kaiser is also 3rd in the nation for his 100 fly.
• The Southwest HS Troyettes dance team won the Division 1 championship title in Pom, and the Divison 1 title in Kick at their recent state competition. Since 1988, the Troyettes have won a combined 39 state championships!
• The Southwest HS football team became the FRCC conference champs for the first time since 1975. The team was also named the Wisconsin Sports Network’s “Team of the Week.” Finally, the team finished 7th in the state for the Associated Press state football poll, and made it to the WIAA quarterfinals.
• Southwest HS senior linebacker Nate Paup was named WFCA first team all-state, and senior defensive back Bryan Tomaszewski was named as an honorable mention. Paup was also named 2012 recipient for the John Anderson Award as outstanding senior linebacker in Wisconsin.
• The Southwest HS girls’ tennis team participated in the WIAA Division 1 team state tournament for an unmatched 18th time.
• Southwest HS basketball player Natisha Hiedeman was nominated for the Wis Sports “Athlete of the Week.”
• Samm Pedersen of Southwest HS was chosen for the “Girls Basketball Performance of the Week” in the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
• Southwest HS’s Aaron Moesch was named an honorable mention to the Associated Press All-State Boys Basketball team.
• Southwest HS sophomore Natisha Hiedeman, Southwest football coach Bryce Paup, and East HS senior Armando Torres were honored at the 12th Annual Bellin Health Sports Medicine Night of Champions. Natisha received the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year Award, Mr. Paup was honored as Coach of the Year, and Armando received the Night of Champions MVP Award.
• Aaron Moesch of Southwest HS was one of 18 local basketball players chosen to compete in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association all-star games in June at the Wisconsin Dells’ JustAGame Fieldhouse. The event features top senior players from the state competing in one of five games divided by the WIAA tournament divisions. Bryan Tomaszewski of Southwest has also been selected to play in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association all-star charity football game on July 20th at Titan Stadium at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh.
• Southwest HS students Trevor Schwartz and Morgan Stary were named the Press-Gazette boys and girls junior bowlers of the year.
• West HS freshman Morgan Yates was accepted with a full tuition scholarship to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre for the 2013 Summer Intensive.
