Well-designed courses in numerous content areas are currently provided through Northeast Wisconsin Online Network (NEWON) and Wisconsin eSchool Network, Inc. (WEN). Classes are coordinated through the Alternative Education Office. Taught by licensed teachers, classes are delivered through the Internet, and may be accessed from home or school computers. Credit is issued for successful completion of each class.

The Green Bay Area Public School District provides many middle and high school students the opportunity to take online courses. Student participation is coordinated by the District’s Online Program Office at (920) 448-7388. Courses are currently provided through the Wisconsin eSchool Network, INC (WEN) and Northeast Wisconsin Online Network (NEWON). Classes in numerous content areas are delivered through the Internet and students can access their courses from home or their home school. All classes are taught by licensed teachers and students are provided with support from a Local Education Guide (LEG) from their home school. Credit is issued for successful completion of each class.
This school option is designed to address specific learning needs for students who are prepared to learn outside the conventional classroom. Online learning provides:
access to courses not available at Green Bay high schools.
accelerated learning and enrichment for high achieving students.
approved coursework for non-traditional students and those with extenuating circumstances.
an opportunity for motivated, credit-deficient students to complete needed courses.
Rolling enrollments extends registration timelines within the school year.

The eight characteristics listed below are keys to successful completion of online coursework. Successful online learners are:
- Proficient in use of computers and Internet navigation. Because all interaction happens via computer, computer skills are necessary to participate.
- Self-motivated and learn well independently. The freedom and flexibility of online learning also requires personal responsibility. Online learning takes commitment, discipline, and an ability to work independently.
- Careful to allow ample time for the course. Online learning is not easier than classroom learning. In fact, many students will say it requires additional time and commitment. Students must be prepared to stay on pace by logging-on to the course and completing assignments at least three per week.
- Effective time-managers. Structuring time to effectively participate is up to the learner. Successful online learners manage time well enough to complete assignments, study, and communicate with their teacher and Local Education Guide (LEG) while juggling any additional courses, work, or social obligations.
- Careful to follow written information/directions for completing assignments. Web-based courses require that close attention be paid to written instructions as the teacher cannot clarify assignments face to face.
- Good readers and writers. In online courses, reading may be the main source of information. Additionally, nearly all communication is written, so it is critical to feel comfortable in expressing ideas in writing.
- Consistent in communication with their teacher and Local Education Guide. The professionals working with online learners expect regular communication via e-mail, phone or in person. Teachers must be consulted weekly and LEG contacts should occur monthly.
- Problem solvers who ask for help when needed. In the virtual classroom, knowing how to solve problems and when to seek assistance are important skills. Assistance will be available, but it must be requested and an immediate response may not be available.
